Common Heating and Air Conditioning Problems and Solutions

In some situations, the average homeowner is able to fix his or her heating and air conditioning problems, but in other situations where the cause of the problem is hard to detect, it’s best to contact a heating repair technician to evaluate your system. Here are a few tips on things to check before you call for HVAC repair services.

Have You Checked Your Air Filter Recently?

Artic heating & Air ConditioningThe airflow to your Air Conditioning or Heating unit is very important for the system to operate efficiently and properly. In order to insure proper air flow it is important air filters be changed regularly. Dirty or clogged filters can cause your heating and air conditioning system to malfunction, change the filter if necessary. Please note that your heating and air conditioning system should never be operated without an air filter.

In severe cases a dirty or clogged air filter can cause the system to freeze and ice up. If your system does ice up we recommend you to shut it down immediately, take extra precautions to insure your home is protected from water damage when the ice thaws, and call a HVAC repair man to diagnose the issue.

Check the Fuse Box or Breaker Panel

Artic heating & Air ConditioningCheck your circuit breaker panel to see if the breaker to your heating or air conditioning system has tripped, if so reset the breaker. Please note that the circuit breaker is a safety device and if it trips again after resetting, you should call for repair service to diagnose the issue. Circuit breakers usually trip due to your system pulling more power than it should, but could also be a result from a weak or bad breaker or faulty wiring.

Circuit Breakers are not the only source of disconnect to your air conditioner or heater. Gas Furnaces commonly have a source of disconnect that looks like a light switch. This switch should be clearly marked with a red cover labeled emergency shut off. Sometimes these disconnects get accidently bumped or turned to the off position shutting the system down. Air handlers will have circuit breakers on the unit itself that should be checked to make sure they are not tripped or accidently turned to the off position. Air Conditioners and Heat Pumps have a pull out style disconnect that should be checked to make sure they are pushed in tight and not flipped to the off position.

Please make note that disconnects can have up to 240v of electricity running to and from them and can be highly dangerous, so be very careful when diagnosing any electricity malfunction. If you do not feel comfortable, it is probably best to call a repair technician.

Check the Thermostat Operation and Settings

ThermostatcropCheck to make sure your thermostat is set to the desired settings, the MODE should be in either HEAT or COOL depending on the season, and the fan should be in the AUTO position. In COOL mode confirm the desired temperature is lower than the room temperature and in HEAT mode confirm the desired temperature is above the room temperature.

If you have a digital thermostat and the screen is blank change the batteries. If your thermostat does not have batteries than the system has most likely lost power, the low voltage fuse has blown or tripped, or the thermostat needs replaced.

Emergency Water Overflow Safety Devices

Artic heating & Air ConditioningMost air conditioning systems are protected by multiple emergency water overflow switches. If your system has an emergency drain pan below the indoor unit, it should be protected with an overflow pan switch. If the emergency drain pan has water in it we recommend shutting the system down and calling a HVAC repair technician to diagnose the issue. If there is no water in the pan check to see if the pan switch was bumped and needs to be reset.

Another source of water protection will be on the condensate drain line or built in to a condensate pump. These devices protect your home from water damage if the condensate drain becomes blocked or clogged. Simply flush out the drain line and the system might start operating again.

When the Heating and Air Conditioning System is not the Problem

Sometimes homeowners believe that the heating and air conditioning system is the source of a problem, when in fact it could be an issue with the utility company. Believe it or not, we get a few calls from homeowners for repair service to come out and find there is no power to the home, their propane tank is empty, or the gas meter has been shut off.

Artic heating & Air ConditioningThere are also power company incentive programs that allow the power company to cycle on and off your heating and air conditioning system during peak demand. This allows the power company to balance the supply of electricity on the network by adjusting or controlling the load rather than the power station output. If you are enrolled in a rewards program with your local utility company check to make sure your system has not been temporarily cycled off. If you are in a rewards program you will most likely have a Load Management box attached to your outdoor unit with indication lights to let you know it is cycled off, or a Utility company thermostat that will indicate the system is temporarily cycled off.

It’s important that if you can’t locate the source of a problem upon an inspection, you let a professional repair technician help you diagnose the problem and offer solutions. This way you know that every aspect of your system has been assessed and the proper component will be fixed.
